Why 2025 Is the Year to Chase the Northern Lights
Posted by: Olivia

2025 is expected to have the best Northern Lights displays in 11 years because we are in peak of Solar Cycle 25 — a period when the Sun’s magnetic activity is at its strongest.

Northern lights are caused by the sun and are directly linked to the sun activity. The sun activity is following a 11-years cycle, alternating between maximum and minimum every 5 years.

In 2019-2020 the sun activity reached a solar minimum, therefore around 2025, it will be strongest.

To witness the strongest and most vivid Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), one should travel north of the Arctic Circle, during peak aurora season (September to March), with clear, dark skies and minimal light pollution.

Best Places Around the World to Experience the Northern Lights:

 1. Tromsø, Norway

Why: Located right in the auroral oval.

Best time: Late September to early April.

Bonus: Fjords, Sami culture, and whale watching.

2. Finnish Lapland (e.g. Rovaniemi, Saariselkä)

Why: Stable weather and magical snowy landscapes.

Best time: December to March.

Bonus: Glass igloos and reindeer safaris.

 3. Reykjavik & Northern Iceland (e.g. Akureyri)

Why: Active aurora and dramatic volcanic backdrops.

Best time: September to April.

Bonus: Combine with hot springs and glacier hikes.

4. Russia

Why: Russia’s far north lies directly under the auroral oval, making it one of the most reliable regions in the world to see the Northern Lights. Locations like Murmansk, Teriberka, and the Kola Peninsula are particularly famous for their accessibility and strong displays.

Best Time: Late September to early April

Bonus: Combine your aurora trip with Arctic activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, and ice fishing.

Experience Russian winter culture, from banya (sauna) rituals to traditional northern cuisine.
